What is Give No Quarter

Image
In today's day in age the idea is of a film about pirates is thrown to the side. This is due to Disney basically having a monopoly on the genre with the successful franchise Pirates of the Caribbean. Ever since the early 2000's pirate films have been something that is unachievable in fear of being compared to Pirates of the Caribbean. I feel differently about the idea, rather than fear I feel excitement.  Throughout taking my English composition 2 I have learned a lot and I mean a lot about pirates. I have learned what is fact and what is fiction when it comes to pirates. such as that pirates did not actually walk the plank and say aarrgh. This is contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe. My biggest take away from this course is from my view as a writer. There are so many fantastic characters that are just going to waste waiting to be used and told stories bout during the golden age of piracy. These are stories that the pirates of the Caribbean stories have not

Black beards secret weapon

I sit on the deck with a telescope in hand in search of oncoming ships. The top deck is empty. The captain is sound asleep in his chambers and the rest of the crew do the same below deck. I still find it absurd that Captain Blackbeard only assigns one man for lookout duty. If I were captain I would have at least three or four men out here in case one died in an attempt to alert the others. This was just a pipe dream because I wouldn't dare talk back to Captain Blackbeard. The man would have me executed just to prove a point. Things were so much easier when I was just a simple buccaneer under some no-name pirate. I could trust my captain to not slit my throat at any time. I remember hearing stories before I joined about Black Beard sitting at a table with three of his crewmates. as time passed one of the crew realized he had somewhere to be. not long after he left the captain pulled out two pistols. This astonished the two crew members, pondering what the man was planning to do

Torture in Pirate days

Image
Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir dogs   Torture is a word that makes people's skin crawl.  It brings up horrific images of inhuman acts being performed. The general jumps to military torture such as the iconic waterboarding technique. Torture has also been reimagined in the medium of film. Quentin Tarantino's first film Reservoir dogs weren't just conversations revolving around whether Mr pink should tip or not. The image to the left should bring back memories of descriptive torture seen in the film. The scene has Mr. White who has captured a cop dance around to the song stuck in the middle with you by Steelers Wheel. Mr. White takes a razor blade and cuts the cop's face, this doesn't seem to satisfy the man so as of result he takes the same razor and cuts the man's ear off. This scene is disturbing, making the viewer's skin crawl, but is nothing compared to the type of torture the pirates in the golden age used. Pirates of the Caribbean The Cu

Red Haired Thief

I lay in a bed unlike my own, to the right of me is some red haired  broad from the previous night.  Not surprised by this encounter since this was a casual way to end the night for a pirate. I throw myself out of the bed and was greeted with a pounding feeling in my head. The rum last night did a number on me. I let the sleeping broad lie in the bed. I get up to find my coat . the co at was on a hanger in the corner of the room. Something was missing in my coat my flintlock pistol, I slowly looked around the room for my iconic pistol. While looking I noticed that the sleeping broad was wearing my captains hat. I yanked the hat off her head and somehow didn't wake her. Next to her was bottle of rum that I picked up to cure my head. I was given disappointment when the bottle had nothing but a drop in it. The broad must have drank the rest of it. Putting the bottle down I find my pistol laying on the ground near the bed. The pistol was my pride and joy it was like no other norma

Henry Morgan wasn't a hero

Image
Picture this you are sitting on your comfy couch watching a nice game of baseball The braves are up by 1 in the bottom of the 8th inning  and you are wearing your Freddie Freeman jersey for good luck. Suddenly the game cuts to commercial after the inning ends. A commercial for Captain Morgan rum plays and you see this macho manly captain in a nice red coat and a long black beard raise his glass and drink a drink. That man is Captain Henry Morgan one of the most successful pirates and a man who was famous enough in history to have his own Rum. Now just like in the commercial Captain Henry Morgan is generally viewed as this famous pirate who was a macho man and in some cases a War Hero. Based on the image that was placed in your head by the commercial he is seen as a good leader who most likely treated his crew right and as most pirates left no mercy for who they were attacking.Only some of that assumption is true. The man was great leader and completed many raids with small crew

Past and modern day thief's the original currency

Image
Leo Dicaprio playing Jordan Belfort(Wolf of WallStreet) In today's word take a look in a wallet or a purse, chances are there is a green paper called a bill. Could be one dollar bill, a five dollar bill, or a twenty dollar bill. The point is that this money was not always the green paper in Mr Dicaprio's hands on the image to the left. Back in the the pirate age of the 1500s instead of paper money or the coins we know today they were plundering pieces of eights. Pieces of eight were silver coins counted as eight reals hence the name. This currency was also known as the Spanish dollar. They were granted this name due to the fact they were made in Spain. The currency would leave the coasts of Spain through the hands of Pirates. Through plunders and takeovers the currency would transport. The treasure was known as the one the prizes from the new world. The Currency would flow out of Panama in ports like Nombre De Dios. Sir Francis Drake Great adventurer dead (Uncharted

Captain Calico Jack, The Original Jack Sparrow

Image
Pirates in films, games and novels are shown as anti heros. These are all fantasy's originating from The mind of Robert Louis Stevenson who wrote treasure island. He made Long John Silvers a pirate who was a hero to the reader who were mostly boys at the time. Long John shares some inspiration for the characters that we love today such as Jack Sparrow, but there was also a real life inspiration knows as Calico Jack. Calico Jack is known as one of the most flamboyant pirates to exist,  much like A certain sparrow everyone knows and loves. He was a pirate with ideas that burnt bright ,but faded fast. His ideas and personality made him quite popular among his crew. His popularity launched him into the role of captain when his previous captain Charles Vane was labeled a coward. Captain Calico Jack would go on to lead quite a career stealing a large ship called the Kingston. Shortly after stealing the large ship it was stolen back and he barley escaped with his life. He escaped
